Rhinoplasty

What a Rhinoplasty Can Do

A rhinoplasty (or nose job) is a versatile procedure for reshaping the nose that can fix most common complaints people have about their noses. Rhinoplasty can improve a nose that:

  • Is too large
  • Is too wide, especially in the bridge
  • Has a hump in the bridge
  • Has a bent or crooked bridge
  • Has an unattractive slope
  • Has an upturned or downturned tip
  • Has a large or droopy tip
  • Has nostrils that are too wide
  • Has restricted airflow

Most of these can be addressed in a rhinoplasty if you are a good Rhinoplasty Candidate.

The Rhinoplasty Procedure & Recovery

A rhinoplasty can be performed as either an open or closed procedure. In a closed procedure, all incisions are made inside the nose. In an open procedure, an incision is made in the columella, the skin between the nostrils, to allow greater visibility during the procedure. For more complicated cases, an open rhinoplasty may be recommended. In most cases, the incision heals well, and in the shadow of the nose the scar is barely noticeable.

Once the incisions have been made, the nose is reshaped. This generally requires reshaping the cartilage. It may require shaving or breaking the bone. Sometimes cartilage from a donor site (such as the ear) is used. Once the reshaping is complete, the incisions are closed, and the nose may be fitted with splints. You will have an outside splint for six to seven days.  It will not be packed.

There is typically little discomfort from rhinoplasty. Over-the-counter medication is sufficient for most people. At first, your nose will have an outside splint, and you may experience some bruising and swelling for the first few days. This will diminish over the first few days, and by the time the bandages are removed (about a week), you will already see some improvement in the shape of your nose. The results will continue to improve over the next several months, though, and some people do not see final results from their rhinoplasty until perhaps a year after the surgery. Once achieved, the results are very long lasting.

Why Choose Feagin & Owen for your Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is the hardest of all plastic surgery procedures to master. It takes surgeons years to learn the subtleties of the craft, even if they are well-trained and highly skilled surgeons. For any surgical procedure, you want to work with a board-certified plastic surgeon, but for rhinoplasty it is especially important that you talk to your surgeon about his level of experience and look closely at his work. You already know how hard it is to conceal the appearance of your nose –you do not want to have to conceal the bad results of a rhinoplasty.

Dr. Charles Feagin and Dr. William Owen are board-certified plastic surgeons with nearly 60 years’ combined experience performing rhinoplasty for patients in Alabama, Georgia, and Florida. They see many of their patients on a daily basis, and they take pride in being able to look at their work without feeling it is anything but the highest quality their training, skill, and experience could achieve. You can see some of their work in our Before and After gallery.

The best way to learn if you are a candidate for nasal cosmetic or reconstructive surgery is to get a personal evaluation of your nose, health, and other factors.
