Serving Dothan, Alabama and Panama City, Florida areas
Liposuction, sometimes known as suction-assisted lipoplasty (SAL), has been a popular procedure for decades, and in that time, many innovations have been tried to improve the procedure. Tumescent liposuction, power-assisted liposuction, ultrasonic liposuction, laser-assisted liposuction (most commonly referred to by the brand name SmartLIpo®), and water-assisted liposuction are all innovations designed to improve the quality of results and increase your comfort and safety.
At the Feagin & Owen Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Center, we have evaluated all these technologies and have adopted the ones we feel are beneficial to our patients. We use both the tumescent and ultrasonic liposuction techniques and will be happy to talk to you about which one is right for your case. To learn more, please contact us today to schedule a consultation with Dr. Charles Feagin or Dr. William Owen.
What Is Ultrasonic Liposuction?
Ultrasound is sound waves that are too high-pitched to hear. They carry a lot of energy. This energy causes fat cells to dissolve, making it easier to remove them without damaging other tissues. This works because the nature of fat cells. In general, the number and distribution of your fat cells is set at puberty. When fat deposits grow larger, it is not because you get more fat cells, but because fat cells get larger. These distended fat cells are more vulnerable to ultrasonic energy than other cells.
When Is Ultrasonic Liposuction used?
At the Feagin & Owen Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Center, we have two different ultrasonic liposuction machines, and depending on the characteristics of your fat deposits and your cosmetic goals, we may use ultrasonic liposuction on virtually any area, including:
- Upper back
- Breast (especially for male breast reduction)
- Arms (though we may recommend an arm lift instead)
- Muffin top
- Love handles
- Spare tire
- Lower back
- Saddle bags
- Ankles (cankles)
Most of the time, we prefer to use our more powerful ultrasonic liposuction machine, but for areas where a subtle touch is required, we have a VASER ultrasonic liposuction machine. VASER liposuction is best used when only small amounts of fat need to be removed from a particular area. Since, Dr. Feagin and Dr. Owen have performed thousands of liposuction procedures, they will be able to discuss with you which method of liposuction will give you the best result.
Why Feagin & Owen for Your Liposuction Procedure
For all the innovations in technology, liposuction machines are just tools, they depend on the skilled hand of a plastic surgeon to select the right tool for the right job and use it properly. To get the best results from an ultrasonic or any other kind of liposuction procedure, you want to work with a board-certified plastic surgeon with the training and experience to give you the results you desire.
Liposuction is a simple procedure to do. However, it is very difficult to do well. It requires many years and hundreds of procedures before a surgeon becomes skilled in liposuction. Of all of the cosmetic plastic surgery procedures performed, it is critical for you to have liposuction done by a surgeon whom has years of experience in liposuction. Poor results in liposuction are almost impossible to correct. You do not want to go to a “discount” surgeon for liposuction because poor results are hard to correct and liposuction performed without a board certified anesthesiologist present is very dangerous.
Dr. Charles Feagin and Dr. William Owen are both board-certified plastic surgeons with a combined 50 years of experience giving great results to liposuction patients in Dothan, Alabama; Columbus, Georgia; Panama City, Florida, and surrounding areas. Dr. Feagin was the first surgeon in Dothan, Alabama to use liposuction. He began using liposuction in 1983 and has used it virtually every week since then. Dr. Owen joined the practice shortly after and has himself an extensive body of liposuction experience. You can see examples of both our surgeons' work in our before and after gallery.
