Questions about Nose Surgery

What Is Aesthetic Nose Surgery?

Aesthetic nose surgery, also called rhinoplasty or a nose job, is a surgical procedure that reshapes your nose to improve its appearance in terms of size, shape, or proportion to your other facial features. Often, it can be combined with surgery to improve the breathing and  function of your nose.

What Can Nose Surgery Correct?

Nose surgery is successful at correcting most of the common complaints people have about the appearance of their noses. We commonly perform nose surgery to correct:

  • Nose too large compared to other facial features
  • Nose that is too wide for the face
  • Nose that has humps, bumps, or an unattractive slope
  • A bulbous, drooping, or upturned slope
  • Nostrils that are large, wide, or upturned
  • Crookedness or unevenness of the nose
  • Broken noses

We can improve the shape of noses that have always been problematic, as well as those that have been affected by injury.

  • Has parental consent if under 18

Will I Know What My New Nose Will Look Like?

As part of your consultation with Dr. Charles Feagin or Dr. William Owen, you will look at a computer-generated image of what your face will look like with your new nose. The computer picture is never perfect, but it will give you a very good idea and help you communicate your aesthetic goals to your surgeon.

Will I Have Open or Closed Rhinoplasty?

When the procedure is relatively straightforward, we prefer to perform closed rhinoplasty, where all the incisions are made inside the nose. However, to achieve the best possible results in complex cases it is often recommended that you have an open rhinoplasty in which a small incision is made in the columella, the skin between the nostrils. These incisions typically heal very well and leave very subtle scars that are almost unnoticeable.

What Is Recovery From Nose Surgery Like?

There is typically very little discomfort following nose surgery. Expect to have some bruising and swelling, though this should be gone by the time your bandages are removed (about a week after surgery). You should count on taking 4 to 7 days off from work, and refraining from vigorous activities for about 6 weeks.

Will I Have Packing?

Usually we do not pack noses.  By not packing the nose, it makes you more comfortable.

When Will I See My Final Results? Are They Long Lasting?

As soon as we remove the bandages, you should notice a significant improvement in the appearance of your nose. These results will improve over several months. These surgery results can be long lasting, but some people see changes in the shape of their nose over time as a natural result of aging.
