Treating the Signs of Facial Aging

More and more women and men desire a refreshed, more youthful appearance of their face and neck. There are many reasons why people want to improve their appearance. Some want to look as young as they feel. Others feel that attractive and vibrant people have a competitive advantage in the work place. Initial appearance is important when seeking a new partner in life.

Treatments and surgical procedures are designed to address the root cause of the problem. Minor problems such as wrinkles are caused by muscle contraction may be treated with Botox injections. Volume deficient areas on the face can be treated with either your own fat or fillers, such as Juvederm. Loose skin along the jaw line or neck is most effectively treated with surgery.

Our goal is to make your face and neck look younger, natural, and harmonious. We offer several different surgical techniques to rejuvenate your face. Minimally invasive techniques allow a more limited dissection and a faster recovery. A good candidate for this technique is someone with loose skin but little excess or displaced fat. This technique causes minimal bruising and swelling and these patients can usually be back at work in a week.

Younger people may have excess fat in the face, especially in the neck. Skin tone is good and there is no excess skin in the neck or jaw line. This situation is nicely addressed by liposuction alone.

Once jowl formation develops along the jaw line and loose skin develops in the neck, only the more extensive facelift procedures are indicated. The minimally invasive operations are ineffective.

Low eyebrows lead to crowding of skin over the upper eyelid. The resulting tired appearance is corrected with a brow lift. This may be done alone or in conjunction with a facelift. Upper eyelid skin excess with normal brow position is corrected with a blepharoplasty.

Older facial cosmetic operations were only excision procedures. Excess localized fat and loose skin were removed. We now know that aging has many components and different areas of the face and neck age in different ways.

In any given patient’s face there are areas that have too much fat or skin and others that need extra fat volume. Fat volume excess is usually found in the neck and fat deficit areas are usually found around the eyes, cheeks, and anterior to the jowl.

Fat removed from areas of excess is now grafted to deficient area. These newer procedures have greatly improved the results of facial cosmetic operations. The surgical results are more balanced and the appearance more natural. (See example 34F)

The modern day facelift is demanding, requiring surgical expertise, finesse, and critical judgment. These qualities are found in surgeons with formal training in cosmetic plastic surgery and have obtained board certification in plastic surgery. The American Board of Plastic Surgery is the only plastic surgery board recognized by the Medical Board of Medical Specialties. Both Drs. Feagin and Owen are formally trained in plastic surgery, are board certified in plastic surgery, and have maintained their certification.

With over fifty year combined experience, they have performed hundreds of facelifts. This experience and knowledge allows us to design the best operation to address your concerns. Several facelift patients may be seen in the before and after gallery.

Facial procedures may be done in either the office or hospital operating room, using either general or local anesthesia with sedation. Patients usually are off work 5-14 days, depending on the extent of the procedure.
