Dermal Fillers

As we age, many of us find our faces losing the plumpness and volume of youth. Instead of a healthy, young, energetic appearance, our face can look haggard, worn, and tired. Deep lines or folds can mark your face as a result.  The lips lose their fullness and start to droop and wrinkle. If this describes you, then dermal fillers may be able to help. Dermal fillers are an excellent treatment if your eyes have gained a sunken appearance with pronounced shadows and a tear trough. They can also get rid of smile lines--also called parentheses or nasolabial folds, plump your lips, and restore volume to your face generally.

If your face has lost its youthful fullness and is being marked by hollows, lines, and folds, we can help. At the Feagin & Owen Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Center, we can recommend the ideal combination of treatments to correct the specific symptoms of your facial aging, whether that is dermal fillers, BOTOX® Cosmetic, or surgery. About Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are used to replace volume lost in the face as a result of the natural aging process. Most dermal fillers are made from natural or biocompatible materials. We only use this type of filler at the Feagin & Owen Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Center. Dermal fillers can be used for:

  • Correction of hollows under eyes
  • Minimizing tear trough
  • Restoring volume to cheeks
  • Reducing the appearance of smile lines
  • Lip augmentation
  • Enhance the appearance of lips
  • Fill in wrinkles

Not all fillers are appropriate for every problem. We will recommend the right filler for you during your consultation.

Fillers We Offer

We offer only the safest and longest lasting fillers available in the United States. Juvéderm is our most popular filler, and is very similar to another popular filler, Restylane. Juvéderm, like Restylane, is made from hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally found in the skin, the eyes, and joint fluids. Once injected, Juvéderm replaces the body's natural volume. As Juvéderm is absorbed by the body, it maintains its volume by absorbing moisture to lengthen its results. Most often, Juvéderm injections give good results for nine to eighteen months, although it is sometimes a little less for the lips, where constant motion speeds the breakdown and absorption.

Radiesse is a very successful filler for some applications. Radiesse is a composite filler, made of calcium-hydroxy apatite (CHA) microspheres in a methylcellulose gel. CHA is the main substance of tooth enamel and is commonly used as a bone filler. Methylcellulose is a common food thickener. When injected, the methylcellulose gel is absorbed quickly, but the CHA spheres are absorbed  slowly. The body fills in around the microspheres with collagen, so that you get great results for the entire duration of your treatment, generally about nine months to one and a half years. Radiesse is not good for injection near the surface, because the spheres may be visible, and is not used for lip augmentation, but when appropriate it is a great option. Radiesse works well in replacement of deeper tissue loss or to augment areas of soft tissue loss over boney prominencies.

Are Dermal Fillers Right for You?

When appropriate, dermal fillers are a great treatment option. Relatively inexpensive, they give great, if temporary, results. However, sometimes you need other treatments to combat your particular signs of facial aging. BOTOX® Cosmetic combats different wrinkles than fillers, making the two treatments excellent complements to one another. Also, if you have numerous fine wrinkles on your face, you may be a good candidate for advanced skin care or laser skin resurfacing.

Sometimes a tired appearance in the eye region is due not just to a loss of volume, but may also be the result of excess skin or fat in the eyelids, giving them a sagging or puffy appearance. If this is the case, eyelid surgery may be the recommended treatment.

Although dermal fillers and BOTOX® are sometimes described as a "liquid facelift," they are nothing of the sort. If you have loose, excess, or sagging skin, only a true facelift can rejuvenate your entire facial appearance to give you natural-looking results.

Why Feagin & Owen for Your Dermal Filler Treatment

Dr. Feagin and Owen specialize in making you and your face look better.  They understand and are thoroughly trained in all reputable methods to improve your appearance.  Some doctors only do injections and some only do surgery.  Dr. Feagin and Owen routinely perform both, and will help you decide on the method of treatment that you desire.

Dermal fillers may seem like a quick and easy treatment that anyone can perform, but that is not the truth. To perform dermal filler injections properly, your injector must first recognize whether they are an appropriate treatment, select the right filler, and inject the fillers properly to give a natural appearance.

Dr. Charles Feagin and Dr. William Owen are experienced plastic surgeons with nearly 50 years' experience serving the people of Dothan, Alabama; Columbus, Georgia; Panama City, Florida, and surrounding areas. They have been using Juvéderm and Radiesse since their introduction and know how to get great results with these fillers, as well as when another treatment option is necessary.
